How to Read a Basketball Box Score

Every column in a basketball box score, what it counts, which ones are judgement calls, and the derived rates that make the numbers comparable.

The box score is the most complete standard record in team sport. It accounts for nearly every discrete event in a game and it has been kept in a recognisable form for decades. It is also misread constantly, because several of its columns invite conclusions they cannot support.

Shooting

Shooting appears as made and attempted, usually split into field goals, three-point attempts and free throws. The split matters: three attempts are worth fifty per cent more than two-point attempts, so a raw field-goal percentage that mixes them understates a player who shoots mostly from distance. The standard correction is effective field-goal percentage, which weights made three-point shots appropriately, and it should be preferred to the raw figure in almost every comparison.

Free throws sit outside the run of play entirely — unguarded, from a fixed distance — and mixing them into overall shooting figures compares two very different activities.

Rebounds

Rebounds divide into offensive and defensive, and the two are not remotely equivalent. Defensive rebounds are the common case and are often uncontested; offensive rebounds are rarer and represent a recovered possession, which is worth roughly what a turnover costs. A combined rebound total conceals this and flatters players who accumulate uncontested defensive boards.

Assists — a judgement call

An assist is credited when a pass leads directly to a made basket, and "directly" is a scorer's judgement. Standards vary between competitions and, historically, between individual scorers at different venues. Assist totals are therefore comparable within a competition and season, and much less so across them. It is the one column in the box score that is genuinely subjective, and it is rarely flagged as such.

Steals, blocks and turnovers

Steals and blocks are the cleanest defensive counts available, and they capture only the visible fraction of defence. The best defensive work — positioning that prevents an attempt from being taken at all — produces no box score entry whatsoever. A low block total is not evidence of poor defence, and this is the single most common misreading of the entire document.

Turnovers are counted cleanly and are the most directly costly individual event in the game: a possession surrendered with no attempt taken.

Minutes and the rate problem

Every counting column scales with playing time, which makes raw totals almost useless for comparing players with different roles. The standard fixes are per-minute rates, per-possession rates, or a normalisation to a fixed number of minutes. Per-possession is the most defensible because it also adjusts for pace: two teams playing at different tempos generate different numbers of opportunities per game, and totals from a fast team are not comparable to totals from a slow one.

Team columns

At team level the four figures that predict outcomes best are shooting efficiency, turnover rate, offensive rebounding rate and free-throw rate — a framework that has held up for a long time precisely because each measures a distinct way of gaining or losing an advantage. Read those four before reading anything else.

Plus-minus, and why it is so noisy

Plus-minus records the change in score margin while a player was on the floor. It is appealing because it captures everything, including all the contributions no other column records — and it is treated with far more confidence than it deserves.

The problem is attribution. A player's plus-minus depends entirely on the four teammates and five opponents sharing the floor, and over a single game the figure is dominated by who else was playing rather than by the player in question. It becomes informative only across large samples and after adjustment for those shared minutes, which is exactly what the adjusted variants attempt. A raw single-game plus-minus is one of the least reliable numbers printed in any box score, and it is printed alongside columns that are among the most reliable, with no visual distinction between them.

Reading a box score in order

A practical sequence, which takes about a minute:

  • Start with the team totals, not the individuals. The game happened at team level.
  • Compare shooting efficiency first, then turnovers. Those two explain most outcomes.
  • Check the minutes column before reading any individual counting total, so you know what you are comparing.
  • Treat assists as competition-relative and plus-minus as noise until proven otherwise.
  • Only then read the scoring column, which is the one everybody reads first and which explains the least on its own.

What the box score cannot show

Spacing, screening, defensive rotations and shot difficulty are all absent. A box score is a complete record of discrete events and a poor record of continuous play, and every serious analytical advance in basketball has come from adding information the box score never had.
