Multi-Match Views: Following Six Games at Once

Why simultaneous kick-offs exist, what a multi-match view is for, and how to follow several football matches at the same time without losing the thread.

On the closing weekend of a league season, a dozen matches kick off at the same minute. That synchronisation is deliberate and it creates a specific problem: a follower now has more simultaneous information than any single view can carry. The multi-match view — a grid of live matches side by side — is the interface answer, and it is worth understanding both why it exists and where it misleads.

Why simultaneous kick-offs exist

Competitions synchronise final-round fixtures for competitive integrity. If matches were staggered, a club playing last would know exactly what result it needed, and a club with nothing at stake could be playing an opponent who needed a specific outcome. Simultaneity removes that asymmetry. The side effect is a wall of concurrent events.

What a multi-match view is for

The grid answers one question well: what is the current state of every match I care about? It answers almost nothing else. It has no room for context, so it flattens a match that has been one-sided and a match that has been frantic into the same two digits. Used as a scanning tool it is excellent; used as a comprehension tool it is actively misleading, because it trains attention on change rather than on state.

Reading a grid well

  • Order by consequence, not by kick-off. Put the matches whose outcome changes your table position first. Chronological ordering wastes the top of the screen on the matches you care least about.
  • Watch the clock column, not just the score column. A 0–0 at 88 minutes and a 0–0 at 12 minutes carry entirely different information, and the score column cannot distinguish them.
  • Treat a changed number as a claim, not a fact. Goals are occasionally transmitted and then withdrawn after review. On a grid you will see the change without the explanation.
  • Accept the delay. Every cell is a few seconds behind the ground, and different cells may be behind by different amounts if they are sourced differently.

The attention problem

There is a real cognitive cost to monitoring several event streams at once, and it is not evenly distributed: the cost falls almost entirely on comprehension rather than on detection. Watchers of a grid reliably notice that something happened and reliably fail to retain what it means for the wider picture. The practical fix is a deliberate one — after each change, look away from the grid and restate the standings out loud or on paper. It feels absurd and it works.

The grid changes what you notice

A single-match view rewards continuity: you build a picture of how a game is going and update it gradually. A grid rewards discontinuity, because the only thing it can show you is the moment a number changes. Spend ninety minutes in front of one and you will retain a sequence of events and almost nothing about any individual match.

That trade is usually worth making on the final day of a season, when the sequence genuinely is the story. It is almost never worth making on an ordinary weekend, and yet grids are the default view on most services every weekend of the year. The default is a design decision made for the rare case and applied to the common one.

A brief history of the format

Following several matches simultaneously predates the web by decades. Radio programmes built entirely around cutting between grounds established the format's conventions — the running order by importance, the return to a ground where something is about to happen, the summary sweep at the end. Vidiprinters and teletext pages carried the same idea into television, with the same compression: a scoreline, a clock, nothing else.

What changed with the web was not the format but the control. A grid on a screen is scanned in whatever order the reader chooses, which removes the editorial judgement that a radio producer was supplying about which match mattered. That judgement was doing real work, and its absence is precisely why ordering a grid by consequence rather than by kick-off makes such a difference.

Where the analytical work happens

Grids are a consumption format, not an analysis format. Serious work on in-play state uses full event streams rather than scorelines, and the research community around sports analytics has spent years on exactly the question of how much a scoreline understates what happened — the annual MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference is the best-known venue for that work.
