A tournament has more than one kind of threshold. A group placing, a league-phase position and a knockout win can each open the next round, while the point of entry determines how much of the route a team has to travel.
World Cup groups and advancement
The 2026 World Cup had 48 teams in 12 groups of four, under the arrangement set out in FIFA's final-draw procedures. For that draw, the hosts Canada, Mexico and the United States were allocated to pot 1. The 39 remaining qualified teams were allocated among four pots of 12 according to the FIFA men's world ranking issued on November 19, 2025. Two FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament placeholders and four European play-off placeholders were assigned to pot 4.
The tournament ran from June 11 to July 19, 2026. The schedule was revised 24 hours after the final draw to optimize venues and kick-off times. FIFA's 104-match schedule comprised 72 group-stage fixtures across 16 venues and four time zones, followed by a 32-game knockout stage. The advancement rule, stated in Concacaf's account of the draw, sent group winners and runners-up, together with the eight best third-placed teams, into the round of 32.
Club World Cup knockouts
The 2025 Club World Cup brought together 32 clubs from all six FIFA confederations: AFC, CAF, Concacaf, CONMEBOL, OFC and UEFA. It ran from June 14 to July 13, with 63 matches across 12 venues in 11 U.S. host cities.
FIFA's format announcement specified eight groups of four playing a single-game round-robin. The top two in each group progressed to the round of 16, where direct single-match knockouts began. The final was at MetLife Stadium in New York New Jersey.
Champions League qualification
Champions League qualification has an earlier boundary, before the league phase itself. The Premier League's June 8, 2026 explanation recorded 29 direct qualifiers for the 2026/27 league phase and seven places to be filled through qualifying.
The qualifying process comprises three rounds followed by a play-off. From the second qualifying round, it divides into a champions path for domestic league winners and a league path for teams from domestic leagues offering more than one place. The round at which a team enters depends on association club coefficient rankings.
Since 2024/25, the league phase has contained 36 teams, each playing eight different opponents, four at home and four away. Finishing in the top eight brings automatic qualification for the last 16. Places ninth to 24th lead to a two-legged knockout play-off for the opportunity to join them; teams finishing 25th or lower are eliminated.
Intercontinental entry points
The 2025 Intercontinental Cup used a route with different entry points. FIFA's September 10 announcement identified the African-Asian-Pacific Cup as match 2 and the Derby of the Americas as match 3. Their winners met in the Challenger Cup on December 13 for a place in the final.
The African-Asian-Pacific Cup match included Al Ahli FC, the 2024-2025 AFC Champions League winners. It took place on September 23 at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, with a 21:00 local start. The Derby of the Americas on December 10 paired Cruz Azul, the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup winners, with the eventual 2025 CONMEBOL Libertadores champions. The Challenger Cup winner's next opponent was Paris Saint-Germain, the 2024/25 Champions League winner, in the December 17 final.
